Right, hi.

So with the new 7000 cards starting to appear, I am still wondering if it is worth me upgrading my 4870X2 which has served me so well (and still is) for over 3yrs.

The 7950/7970 are probably out of my price range. But with the recent reviews of the 7800 set, I am wondering if that would be a better move for me.

Ideally I can stretch my budget to £350. But anything below that and I am happy really.

So I want to know, from those who used to have 4870X2, what did you go for as an upgrade? Was the 6970 worth it at the time? Or did you go for something else to wait for the 7000 series?

Thanks ladies and gents. :D

If you can stretch to £350 then go with a 7950. I would, any way.

If not? then a 7870 is a nice card to buy now. However, if you are not adverse to Nvidia then do check out the 480. TBH? it will use less power and not even get as hot as your 4870x2. That is if the 4870x2 is anything like the 3870x2 (and they look identical).

I had two 3870x2s, because I picked them up ages ago for £50 each. And they were hot as heck and made loads of noise, but performed rather well.

The 6970 over the past week (literally since the 480 for £185) has become a no pointer sadly. The 480 is faster, and tbh the 6970 with a stock cooler can be equally as loud and hot.

I'd either save up a bit extra for the 7950, or as ALXAndy suggest grab a 6970 or 480 at the moment.

Sadly my 4870X2 died, and I ended up getting a GTX 470 to tide me over until new cards hit.

If your's is still going well, I suggest holding out until Kepler is out before deciding to buy anything.

Prices will change and more variety and competition is always good.

4870x2 was an absolute beast, in games where Crossfire worked fine, it could outpace a 5870 quite easily, if you went for a 7870, OC'ed you'd probably get about 40% gain in overall performance.

Thanks chaps. Not going nVidia cos well, I've had bad experiences with them in the past. So I stay loyal to AMD/ATI.

While the 4870X2 is noisy, I am used to it after using it for so long. Most times I have headphones on so I don't hear it (they are whacked up to 100%).

I'm thinking the 7870 would be a good bet. Given the awesome reviews they have been getting, but the price is rather odd. But we'll see as time goes on. I wouldn't mind a 7970, guess I could scour the MM for one 2nd hand. Someone is bound to let it go. That's what happens when people get excited about new releases, they end up losing the money they should have saved lol.

TBH mate noise doesn't concern me either. My GTX 280 taught me to find a way to get around it.

Personally I won't be getting rid of my 7970 any time soon. I made the choice, and I spent the money. I'm certainly not about to mug myself off for another over priced card :D

Keep your eye on the 7950. They were selling for £325 the other day. Darn good cards too :)
