Calling all Helldivers 2 players

So what's the score with Helldivers 2 and it requiring a PSN account to play. I've read that this was dropped by Sony a few months ago but on Steam it states the following "Requires 3rd-Party Account: PlayStation Network (Supports Linking to Steam Account)".

So PSN required or not?
