Hi all!

Right after the Mac Conference in Jan '07 I'll most likely be ordering a MacPro.

One thing I want to know is, can anyone tell me if you can upgrade the RAM yourself? with 3rd party RAM?

I know when the Mac Pro was first launched a lot of the third party RAM was recalled because the heat sinks weren't beefy enough to cope with the heat. They must have sorted that out by now.

I'm just a bit wary - does anyone know if Intel's next chipset revision is scrapping these FB-DIMMs? Rumours abound that they are going back to ordinary DDR2/3 RAM or something.
 
I'd be inclined to wait until it's clear whether or not FB-DIMMs are a passing fad or not, you wouldn't want to end up in the same situation people who bought into RD-RAM are in now.

Like I said, I'm waiting for the conference in Jan '07 before I make any firm decisions.

Can see myself with one soon though.
 
If you only want 2 Gig, you're as well getting it from Apple when you buy the thing. But, if you want more:

2x512Mb = £200
2x1Gb = £330

I'd get the 2Gb kit and be done with it :)

There was a big who ha, when they were first released, about 3rd party memory being unreliable, which lead Crucial to take the modules off of their compatibility matrix. Crucial have since put them back up, so you've got their guarantee of compatibility.
 
I agree.

Take the hit and get a minimum of 2GB on the MacPro, but I think you're better off just getting it installed by Apple if you worried about compatibilities.

Crucial seem excellent (have bought many modules off their site for previous Macs) so it's up to you if you really want to save that little bit extra?
 
Apple RAM is reasonably priced at the moment, so get as much of it as you can afford installed :) It's also covered within the warranty - unlike 3rd party RAM.

If you install Crucial RAM and put your Apple RAM on the 'bay then if you need to send your Mac Pro in for repairs - then they wont touch it with the Crucial RAM installed.
