Calling all mountainbikers, help with new bike.

I'm going to be getting myself a new mountain bike in the next couple of days but am a bit stuck on what to get.

My budget is no more than 500/550 quid.

I've been looking at a GT Avalanche. My mate has one and he swears by it but I've seen it get fairly mixed/rubbish reviews online.

Also been looking at a Sunn bikes, particularly the Travis model but I've never heard of them. I read a review where someone called them "the French equivalent of Raleigh" which put me off a bit !

Also the Kona Nunu looks quite nice.

I'll be mainly using it for getting to work during the summer but also a bit of woodland trails riding and the occasional jump so need it to be fairly robust.

Any ideas or help would be great

personally i don't like the gt,sunn or kona, but if i were to choose one it would be the kona.

never heard of Cube or Focus, are they any good ? The Marin looks really nice though.

The are both German brands that offer good value for money and are very decent bikes. They also supply Pro teams in cycling so are recognised names.

I reckon I'm gonna take the plunge and go for the Marin Bolinas Ridge. It's a name I've heard of, they seem to get consistent reviews and the geometry and components seem pretty much spot on for what I need it for. Oh and it looks purrrty too ! Cheers for your help guys

I'd say the cube or the focus are ontop in the gearing stakes. The jamis after that as the fork is pretty nice on it.

The marin appears to have the lowest spec of them all to me? I worked on a giant revel the other day and it weight a bloody tonne!(and I hate the whole lets make everything giant branded nonsense compared to easton finishing kit)
