In the time honoured tradition of asking questions to which there is no answer, is it worth getting a 5820k over a 4670k? I game and browse. No rendering, video encoding or anything else associated with high cpu demand. I'm not desperate to spend an extra £150-200 if I don't need to. BUT! I'll probably not upgrade it for 4 or 5 years.

I've got a q6600 now and back then the conundrum was between a slower clocked quad or a higher clocked duo. The two core was faster in games at the time but the quad has arguably lasted much better.

Four or six cores? I gots ta know...
 
Unless you need the upgrade now I'd wait for Skylake which is only a few months away.

I'm not sure when the new hex and octa core chips are out, end of the year, beginning of next year?

Six cores. It's the way the wind is blowing. I went from a Q6600 @3.6 to a Xeon 5650 @4.4 recently, and the improvement is marked. Games that use multiple cores and threads, like Dying Light, really fly.

Before I snagged the Xeon on MM, I was considering an upgrade to a 5820. Nothing less.

skylake are going to be quad max where as 5820k is hex. with the crappy 5% improvement the 5820k will be faster overall.
 
Yeah, I'll +1 the x99 suggestion.

I went z97 just before x99 launched as x79 seemed old and outdated, wish I'd waited.

Possibility of 3 way SLI, and when Haswell-e gets old you'll be buying cheap 12 core xeons second hand to put in it, as people are doing now for x58. Plus it seems silly to buy DDR3 right now.
 
If you're not planning on upgrading for 4 or 5 years then I'd be tempted to get the hexacore OP. I'd hazard a guess that by then games will be utilising all 6 cores efficiently.

I'm tempted by 3 way 980...I'll never do it...but just knowing I can seems good enough :-)
 
I kinda thought 6 core would be the favoured choice. Just a shame the cost of buy in comes from the mobo and RAM, rather than just the CPU itself. Not one X99 mobo anywhere near 100 sheets!

Tis a more expensive business. Still its diminishing returns, so not to be too envied.
 
No games support 6 core... No performance increase with ddr4 ...didn't need multi gpu and only have 2ssd as all my storage is on the server... I sold my x99 5930k combo and downgraded ... Have I missed it ? No ... By the time 6 core is needed in games whole new tech will be out just like the x58 platform ...

So in essence apart from some quicker render times in Vegas I wasn't seeing the investment ...

None of the games I played needed 16gb ram and Sony Vegas didn't either !!

When you can fire up my budget pc and play some games and feel virtually no difference I had to have a chat with myself !!!
