Calling all OCUK data crunchers !

Been reading a few things and while the wiki page says the project is looking for cures for childhood diseases, the actual site seems to be doing more research into things like Avian Flu, SARS and biological warfare 'cures'

" Overview | Anthrax | Smallpox | SARS | Malaria | Ebola | Botulism | Plague | Avian Flu"

While I give my most sincere sympathies to Skywalker - I really can't imagine what they're going through at the moment - it does seem daft to me to stop doing f@h to start doing this. We know what's going on with f@h and the research is a long term project into many (just as important) diseases. If they are indeed not entirely devoted to the cure of childhood diseases, as pointed out above, then I'd prefer to stick with a research program where we know what it's trying to achieve.

I know what you're saying but they seems to be all about it from what I can see.

CommunityOS™ lets us tie 1000's of computers into a single machine able to rival (or beat with more volunteers) the worlds largest super computers. D2OL™ is the software program that is downloaded to your computer and used to evaluate drug candidates for Tuberous Sclerosis. Again, no knowledge needed, and if you close the window it runs invisible behind the scenes.

Taken from their site.

Personaly I'm not asking any one to stop their current DC projects, just trying to get some new people in on the act.

I'm not saying this as an excuse to stick with folding but I would hate to see everyone jump on this project wanting to help towards the sort of thing Skywalker and family have suffered recently when the project itself seems incredibly vague as to what it is doing and from what I can see, might not be doing any childhood disease related research at all :(

In fact, nowhere on the d2ol site is there any mention of childhood disease and seeing as that is where your processing statistics are coming from, it would concern me that none of your processing power is being used for the cause you intended it to be used for.

Which is what I thought, but after looking around the site, I followed the link half way down on the left hand side to:

http://www.childhooddiseases.org/,

this appears to be where the team he has setup has got work from.

Looking at some of the stats, shows work the best candidate found for the team is a TSC... which seems to be on the right lines.

http://d2ol.childhooddiseases.org/stats/teamProfile.jsp?id=10041

From my, admittedly brief, click around during my lunch break I found this FAQ on the D2OL forums.

It appears to me that the childhooddisease.org / communityTSC project is dedicated to studying Tuberous Sclerosis Complex but uses the D2OL engine to do it. Meaning you won't be contributing to other searches you may not want to assist.
I could be completely wrong about that though as I only had a brief scan.

What concerns me more is that I couldn't find anywhere that said the results and potential cures would be placed in the public domain. This means that its possible for the work done by contributors to end up as the IP of the company running the project.
I don't have time for a really thorough search right now though so it's possible I just missed it while I was scan reading.

That would be my concern too. I have a policy (if you can call it that) of not using my money to buy hardware and pay for electricity only to end up lining the pockets of drugs companies. They have more than enough money to do their own research.

Right ok, that's ok then, I just didn't want people to all join up to help the TSC research and have their PCs sat crunching looking at Anthrax cures and stuff.

Though Pumpkinstew raises a very valid point about IP.

What are you doing with the results?

We are the recipient of the results and we perform the initial post processing analysis internally with the collaboration of our advisors and scientists, who are experts in statistical mechanics and structure based drug design. We will develop any promising leads with the help of our collaborators

It's a bit vague...

Single CPU computer switched to TSC

I've installed the client on my single CPU games machine (the dual core laptops are still BOINC-ing) and joined OcUK for this project. Hey, I'm in the Top 5 already (would sound more impressive with there were more than 5 members :D )

Once you have the client installed you will be asked to enter your email, one you have done this go here and follow the instructions

http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/createMember.jsp

then login here and you should be able to join the OcUK team

http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/memberLogin.jsp

Which site allows you to create an account depends on which site you downloaded your client from.

If you downloaded from D2OL:

http://www.d2ol.com/dOL/download_instructions.html

Use the above link to create your account.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

If you downloaded from Rothberg Institute:

http://www.childhooddiseases.org/download.html

Use the following link to create your account:

http://d2ol.childhooddiseases.org/memberServices/createMember.jsp

--------------------------------------------------------------------

There are now two OcUK teams crunching these numbers:

http://app.d2ol.com/memberServices/teamProfile.jsp?id=10043

http://d2ol.childhooddiseases.org/memberServices/teamProfile.jsp?id=10041

I'm with Rothberg...so I should be in an institute ;)
