Calling all OcUK guitarists: Strumming

I have a question for all you guitarists out there;

How do you learn to strum ?

This may sound like a daft question. I am teaching myself to play with all sorts of books / videos / online sites.
I am picking basic chords up and find finger picking fairly straightforward. But as soon as I come to strum a few chords, it just sounds dreadful.

I know I am fretting the chord, because if I hit each string it sounds fine.

I think what I mean is I am doing something like this (E chord)..

Strum down, and hit all strings.
Strum up, and land heavy on the bottom e string and miss the rest.
Strum down, miss the first 2 strings, and hit the bottom 4.

That kind of thing.
