Hi all.

Need some adivce. I am bout to blow £700 on a vostro, and supprisingly when i was speaking to the woman on the phone from dell, she really wasnt selling me it. She was saying that it doesnt support networks, that it would basically break after a year, it was noisy, and produced loads of heat etc. Is she trying to make me buy an XPS instead?

The spec i am going for is:

V1700 CORE 2 DUO T7500 2.20GHz,800,4M 1
17.0" UltraSharp Wide Screen WUXGA (1920x1200) TFT Display with TrueLif 1
V1700 Matte Jet Black with 2.0 MP camera 1
Free upgrade from 6 cell battery to 9 cell battery 1
Save £70 Ex Vat 1
English Documentation V1700 1
English/Irish Ship Accessories - Power Cord 1
Vostro 1700 Resource DVD (Diagnostics & Drivers) 1
3072 MB 667 MHz Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (1x1024 MB + 1x2048) 1
Hard Drive 320GB Dual Serial ATA (2 X 160GB 5400RPM) 1
DVD+/-RW Drive 8x 1
90W AC Adapter - 2 wire 1
Primary 9-cell 85WHr Li-Ion Battery 1
Not Included Carry Case 1
256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 1
UK Modem Cable and Adapter Internal V.92 Data, Fax, Voice Functions 1
Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-PCI Card EUR 1
UK/Irish - (QWERTY) - Internal Keyboard 1

So basically she has put me off, and i am wondering if its worth paying a little extra for a lesser XPS machine.

It will be used for business and home use, i would say at least 5 hours of computing a day.

So my questions are: Is it really hot? are the fans noisy? Is it a crap machine?

What you all think?

Many thanks for advice.

I only had one for a day (decided I wanted something smaller), but I was impressed by the build quality and the fans were very quiet. No problems networking either. Not sure what that salesperson was on about - if you still have her details you should probably let Dell know about her.

If you're buying online, go via Quidco.com for an extra 5% off :)

EDIT: Try code 6$3PDNQL4CD2VJ too

Thanks for the reply.

Just had a look at Sony VGN-AR51J and its only another £100 and is a Sony, hence build quality wont be an issue. Think i have made my mind up.

The vostro 1700 is awesome, I have one, solid build quality and no networking issues at all. I think they have a glut of XPS they want to sell.

Not sure I'd get the extra hdd shipped with the system (cheaper elsewhere?)
