Hi all,

This is a question exclusively for those with the 60gb PS3 model (the one which plays PS2 games).

I was wondering how this model is in terms of sound output? I had a 40gb version (later than the 60gb) and it sounded like a jet taking off (really horribly obtrusively loud)- was wondering if the 60gb model has this problem?

As a general rule the 60gb one is louder than newer 40gb/80gb phat ones and 120gb/250gb slim ones.

The CPU and/or GPU was shrunk in newer units so they heat up less, and the fans run less, as a result.

There have been quite a few models/revisions so I don't want to say for certain, but I think there was a 40GB one that had the same CPU and GPUs as the 60GB and then later the newer 40GB/80GB had the smaller CPU/GPU and less heat/noise.

It is possible you had an old 40GB or a newer one that was loud, for some reason.

I don't have a 60Gb but had one up till a couple of months ago and it was louder than my mates 40GB. Most 60GBs will be 2-3 years old now and have a fair amount of dust in them which can cause it to heat up and make the fans work harder.

Mine's pretty much completely silent. Although, when left on for a few hours, it'll sound crazy for about 5 mins and then go back to normal.

i never noticed my bros 60gb and dont notice my upgraded 40gb

and im a right weirdo when complaining about noise too. every little noise always annoys me

Had my 60Gb since release, still going and very silent. Willing to leave it on over night when downloading unlike my PC and 360.

My 60gb is pretty much silent, the fan some times kicks in on overdrive for a few mins when its been on for a good few hours but 90% of the time its silent.

Its quieter than either of my 2 Xbox 360's btw one of which is a Falcon and the other a Jasper.

My 60GB starts silent, after 10 minutes gaming it starts to ramp up and soon after ramps up even more that it's as loud as a hoover, this slows doen a minute later and stays at a slightly lower speed.

Not silent but not loud enough to be annoying.

This is a refurbished one, my first one only went to the '2nd setting' and never the loudest setting but when it got there it would never slow down, my refurb one slows down to near silent at idle

When the PS3 is on there is a noise from the PS3 but with sound on while playing I never hear it, only during silent loading screens can I hear it.

Occasionally after playing for hours the fan can get louder but it never stays at the same speed for long.

It might need the case removed and dust blown out although I have no idea how to remove the case at present.

ive owned mine for a few weeks now and when I first started playing on it was amazed at how quiet it is compared to my xbox360, I dont know how it compares to the newer models but mine only gets noticable if the ambient temperature gets too high in my room after a few hours, it is by no means loud however
