Hi all,

I need to change the cam belt on a 1.8 Zetec MK1 Mondeo engine, are they easy to do? Or how many hours labour do you think a garage would charge for (if its a pig of a job :p)

Also where would be the best place to buy a kit? (Tensioners, belt and the like?)

Anything else that should be replaced at the same time?

Thanks :D

Edit: The car has done 95k miles, and looks like the belt has never been changed

80k or 5 years. tensioner and guide pulleys should (must) be replaced at the same time.
Book time is 2.2 hours for the job. Looks like a reasonably easy job, I'd do it myself.

Assuming you mean pre-96 Mondeo -

There used to be a site where a guy documented how he did it. It is gone now, along with the illustrations. However the wonders of the wayback machine will allow you to read the text of his ordeal.

On those engines the cambelt tensioner is likely to go before the belt, so buy a full belt and tensioner kit.

The waterpump should also be replaced at the same time as you cannot reach it without taking the belt off.

It's a bit of a tedious job, as are 99% of DOHC FWD head jobs. Access is limited and you need to concentrate and not miss out any steps.

I wouldn't recommend it as a "my first proper mechanical job"

Doh!

My brother threw me when he said it was the cam belt, I have just checked with an online version of the Haynes, as I didn't think it was the cam belt (as it goes on the aux/power steering pump etc), so what I need is an Auxiliary Belt,
1 spanner job according to the manual :D

I have just looked in the history I have and I have a stamp saying the cam belt was changed about 300 miles ago, along with a general service. I will take off the cam cover to check it though,

It does seem daft that it hasn't been changed but at least it isn't the cam belt!
