I have just bought a used A1 mk3 amp. I am currently looking for some bookshelf speakers e.g. Tannoy F1's or the Mordaunt Short 902i's, but I was wondering would it be possible to use both the speakers and a Sub with this amp??

Thanks in advance.

It doesn't have a seperate sub output so you'd need a sub that could feed off the L/R outputs on the amp, for example the BK Gemini, however that would work, yes.

902i's all the way, ive got a pair with a mordaunt short 309 sub, they sound amazing even when playing rubbish mp3s from my computer. you may be able to get the sub to work if the a1 has a send, however im not sure how controlling the volume would work on this. there are several ways you could possibly bodge this too work. however im running mine from my sub output from my sound card on pc atm. Bottom line is they can all work together might be a bit tricky and possibly annoying to use tho depending on how its done. you intending on running this from your pc or as a hi fi set up?

The A1 doesn't have a sub out. For decent music playback you'd need a sub with high level ins, like the Gemini. Setting your card to 5.1 but only using fronts and sub would sound horrid.

hmmm now i look at ur amp u may have a problem in getting this to work nicely, however i'm gonna have to disagree with alex on the comment about setting 5.1 to run to fronts and sub sounding horrid. I'm running that setup now and its far from horrid, clearly not 5.1 but definately not horrid. Tho this is all speculation till we know how you actually intend on using this (pc speakers or hi-fi system). another option if you are running from pc, headphone splitter out of pc to sub and amp the crossover on the sub will take away ur high frequencies. tho im assuming you're going to be buying an active sub from someone like mission or mordaunt short to match the speakers you might get.

well if its coming from a pc maybe try either of the methods ive suggested, headphone splitter from computer and send one to sub, one to amp, or if u got a 5.1 capable soundcard/onboard sound try what ive done and set it as a 5.1 without the rear and centre speakers. any idea on what sub and speakers you want yet?

Thanks for all your replies guys. I have the A1 amp setup with a pair of Tannoy F1's and they sound great!! Can't believe how crisp the sound is!

For now I'm using a sub from an old 5.1 setup that I that I had. This is connected directly to one of the outputs from the sound card so doesn't need to be wired up to the amp. But I still am on the lookout for a decent budget Sub.

Apparently, I can use the 'REC OUT' output from the amp to connect a Sub to it.

yes you can use the rec out to the sub, but as minstadave pointed out im not sure if it would allow you to control the volume from your amp or your computer for that matter. might be best to leave it plugged into your output from your pc as you can control your volume from there. We recently had a rather large house party using a string of stereo amps to produce some of the sound and we found not all amps would change the volume of the record out (admittedly some of these were ancient tho). Always worth giving it a go i suppose it'll only cost the price of a phono to phono cable. When you say you're looking for a budget sub what sort of price range do you mean?

I know i've got this amp and some speakers (no idea what).

Was wondering how i would connect the amp to an Asus D1?
