Slim chance i know but anyone aware of any decent clubs in or around Cambridge? I'm looking for something to complement my Judo and am looking preferably for some form of Muay Thai.

Hey CliffyG, what do you want out of kickboxing/mt? fitness, social aspect/learning something new or learning how to fight/competitions. how much time could you devote and how do you feel about contact/sparring?

I'm currently on a bit of a fitness drive, so predominantly fitness, i'd like to learn how to handle myself better too though. I guess there is a social aspect aswell but it's more just to get me out the house really rather than meeting new people. I have nothing but time these days lol so depending on how i get on i will work it into my week alongside Judo and Football. I'm very interested in sparring but am guessing it will be a few months before i can even consider that (i would imagine a small girl can punch harder than me at the moment :D).

yeah, to be honest my biggest concern with the place is the lack of sparring. i know you want to wait a month or so (which i really don't think you need to do providing the people you spar with are cool) but the benefits are numerous.

Also is it just the one class a week? i didn't see a class timetable but i'd hope for more than one class if you want to improve at an appreciable rate. all in all i'd say go along and try it, they should let you pop along to a trial lesson but approach it with your eyes open. some no no's would be punching into air a lot rather than into pads, being asked to partner up with kids or people much lighter/smaller than you on a regular basis and not being completely spent by the end of the session.

i'd also keep an eye out for other clubs and try a few before you commit to one.

is that convenient to try?

They do have separate evenings for sparring sessions. I just thought it would take a while to get the strength and stamina in my arms to be able to spar effectively.

There are other classes on different days around Cambridge so the option is there is i want it.

The Cambridge free fight club is actually where i planned on going once I'd reached a better level of fitness and became competent at kick boxing as well as progressing my Judo a bit more.

i wouldn't worry too much about building up a base of strength or stamina, you'll still be absolutely pooped after your first session and i'd wager your judo has you at a decent level of fitness. however if you don't feel comfortable sparring immediately then that's entirely your call.

i wouldn't worry too much about going somewhere as a training ground before you move on to another club. at the end of the day if they are a good club then they're a good club and you'll benefit from their teaching from the very start. they might have some serious fighters but everyone has to start somewhere and at the end of the day they want to get their beginners up to standard. the fact they've actually got some fighters sits well with me as well.

Try them both out and see which you prefer, but don't go to one intending it as an introduction and then move on to a 'better' club as it can be harder to unlearn bad habits than it is to just learn new skills.
