Looking for a camcorder for solely fixed tripod filming of sport. 1080 at 60fps is the minimum but 4k/ general decent modern quality is welcome. Up to 10x Zoom is definitely all I need, hence why being open to other options that do less. A slightly wider angle lens is also needed. I have a Gopro which is great, except the lens is too wide for many tripod shots.
£300/500 is the budget, with second hand being fine.
Keep looking at the Panasonic VX1. It's 2018 model btw. 1/2.5 BSI MOS sensor.
But there are loads of options these days for video filming, so just looking for the basic opinions really. Are the newer sensors that beneficial for me, DSLRs worth the weight, heat resistance, reliability, etc etc.
Thanks

Went down the rabbit hole to learn about it all. Camcorders are still the best for video work due to in part their smaller sensors and not overheating during long filming. But also all in one ability is still impressive vs other designs. The UK's current offering for non pro camcorders is small.
Each generation barely anything changes, 2016 till 2025, you get minor LCD screen improvements, USB-C, and erm.
Many cams have had features removed, see shoe, front ring, mic port, etc.
Users reporting drop in quality due to less metal and very plastic feeling.
Batteries and recording time still remain the same.
All 2016 onwards cameras are generally looking at 1/2.5" sensors, and 1/2.3" for slightly older, slight ~10% wide angle increase, that's about it.
Panasonic have the broadest range, but they are near identical. VX3 4k, V900 2k, 2024 release, but you can find a 2018 model which will be identical except for USB-C etc, sensor is the same! There is a mod to get the newer Panas from 50p to 60p via the service menu. That's PAL to NTSC. Pana have slightly wider wide angle than Sony.
Sony have the ax43, it's the same as the ax53, one has a viewfinder. The ax33 was about but i can't find one so moot point.
Canon have the G70. It's pricey and you don't get better quality film wise. Check for aforementioned shoe, viewfinder etc.
Colour handling and dark handling will vary mildly between all brands.
No cam does 4k 50/60fps. Only the pro ones do. So i think i may buy a new Pana V900 and mod to 1080p at 60fps. Again, same as the new VX3, but no 4k. Same sensor. Fairly high bit rate, but the same as the best cams if you choose 1080p option on them. Same codecs throughout still!
I am keeping my eyes open for 2nd hand Panas, VX1, V990/980/970/870/770/981/etc (very very little difference in these, some share the same manual).
