Came across another partition while defragging...

So when I click defrag in W7... it takes a little while to load up ... and when it does I get 3 drives...

and \\?\Volume{6f52a3f0-c406-11de-beaf-beaf-806e6f6e6963}\

I have no clue what that last one is.. I thought it was the USB port on my printer which is connected via LAN (but I have that turned off atm and that drive is still there...

Can anyone offer any comments or opinions about this? Cheers.

Should be the 100MB boot partition that W7 creates.

Yea I thought that too, but I dont see it come up on my computer (presumably) its hidden).

Also it seems to take a good 10 seconds to load up defrag. Is this normal?

It's a hidden partition with no drive letter so it's normal that it doesn't show up under My Computer. It isn't however normal for defrag to take 10 seconds to load, it's pretty much instant on my machine.

Could you tell me if that volume partition on your HD is similarly labelled like mine above?

Could you do me a favour and just time from clicking on disk defragmenter to when the window appears? I have timed it and it takes 8-10 seconds and Im just concerned that this could be a problem elsewhere for my rig.

It takes less than a second, I click the defrag button and the window pops up.

Uncanny... I click mine and it takes more than 9 seconds...

Could this be a problem? Can I ask what HD you have and the size?

Also I was told there is a HD bench util in W7... do you know about it?

I have a 640GB WD Black and a 320GB Seagate 7200.12 in there. I have no idea about a built in HDD benchmark.

I have a 1TB drive. Perhaps bigger HD cause longer load time for defrag? (clutching at straws tbh).

I checked mine, pretty instant when I load the defrag program & I dont have that partition on either of my drives.

On my 7 i got "System reserved" partition in defrag. I guess your OS just "forgot" to hide the cryptic name with this label.

Why would it forget to hide it thought.

And does anyone have any theories about why defray could be taking soon to load? Cause for concern?

Well, it can be system reserved partition from Vista or some other install, thus it doesn't have the name mapping in registry.

And no, you should not think about slow load of defrag tool.

Thanks a lot for your replies also faugusztin (and everyone).

Any theories why it would load slowly? In the back of my mind I am a bit peeved at this.

Also can I ask what HDs you have ?

We don't know what exactly defrag does at startup, but probably it probably checks all your drives - and maybe you have few in registry which are not present, or are spinned down. In the end, it can be down to anything. Maybe you should try to watch what it does through Process Monitor if it really does bother you so much
