Just purchased a Road Angel Plus as I thought I had been done by a camera van yesterday which I am severely worried about!!!

The Road Angels are GPS Drive, but do have a pathetic laser unit which I imagine isnt much use! In regard to mobile camera's I thought that they would work like the camera database from pocketgpsworld which indicates to you if there is or has been a mobile speed van on that road at anytime so at least you have some kind of alert telling you to slow down.

This doesnt seem to be the case. I know the Mobile Camera teams advertise their daily road routine for the public to access. I would have thought that this would be included in the download update which I may add you have to pay for also!

Any advice on this would be appreciated, as I am not sure whether to take it back or not. I realise it will work great with fixed camera's but I was hoping I would at least get an alert for all potential speed van locations

Thanks

Bazola

No im afraid thats not the case. All of the fixed speed camera locations are located via GPS and obvoiusly you will get a warning as you approach them.

Mobile camera vans are detected via the laser attatchment, when you place that in your window it can detect the laser speed guns and will again warn you as you approach. This will work perfectly well.

Why are you writing the laser detector off as pathetic?

No not at all. Mine often picks up camera vans on motorway bridges well before they come in to my view.

It is a hassle however taking it in and out of the car at night and setting it all up. But if it saves me from points or accidents, its well worth it.

Do you have the same model as me? I have mounted mine in the centre at the bottom of the windscreen. I have a Lexus IS200 at present. Do you recommend buying an extra laser unit and putting it in the front grill

By the time a laser detector detects the laser, the gun is already showing the operator the speed your doing.

There's a slim chance you might get a warning as the laser is reflected off another car, but other than that, its pointless.

So I would be better of with pocketgpsworld as at least that alerts me that vans have been there so it can give me plenty of warning

Possible although you can always program your own locations in to the road angel, IE go on to the internet find out where camera vans are and do it yourself seeing as you have already bought it.

No Its a lot of money to pay for something that doesnt do the job properly.

It doesnt do what I need it do!

Better off sticking to my tomtom

So if its seen one there before it will alert you?

What comes up on the screen?

What message is displayed?

No they are still programmed in using the GPS it just comes up with "Mobile camera site" so you know they may not be there. Some of them I have added as well as they werent on the database but they are now Ive added them. No mobile camera has ever set my laser detection off though(they do a lot of tax checks around here though so some may not be speed checks ive been through..

I've also been looking at this today as I received my second NIP in 3 months. 6 points total for me soon...

What I've found from the research I've done is to forget laser detectors unless you are going to fit a jammer as well. This then opens up a whole world of issues should you get pulled over because of a dodgy reading.
Bottom line for me is that I'm selling my bike as I don't seem to be able to control my speeds on it (it would seem), and using my pda database in the car.

Laser detectors are good if you can detect things like laser scatter as it means you get a bit of notice by chance but generally if you pick up a laser, it's picking up you.

Just the way it is unfortunately and no amount of databases and GPS will help either. Only way to save your license is a jammer but that is a whole issue in itself.

Yeah. I hope I have got the best unit for the job, as long as it catches 99% of these camera its better than nothing.

I have indeed just got rid of my motorbike last saturday into a crash barrier near the cat and fiddle!!

Lucky to be here but thanks to my Shoei XR1000 and my Hein Gericke leathers I still have legs and my head is still intact after going head first into the crash barrier!! after debrie on the road.

Just annoyed at these mobile units. I wasnt even goin quickly i have an automatic and at the time i didnt even have my foot on the accelerator i was going down hill and the speed krept up to around 38 i think which was probably 35 in realtime. I just know the speed camera was pointed right at the top of the hill so i have no chance. Trouble is thats one car accident one motorbike accident and three points in less than a year at the age of 24.

Not a good record!!! :(

Don't bother paying extra for it.

Halfords seem to be selling them cheap atm though, for £150 with it.

Alrite cheers.

And by the way, do they run on batteries? My cigarette lighter doesn't seem to work.

The compact comes with a USB wire and an adapter for your cigarette lighter, so yer your going to need it.
