Righto, a while ago we bought a Sony Cybershot DSC-W7.. were not pro photographers but do enjoying taking a quality snap.. however

With our previous digital camera you could get a lovely focused image without having the flash on..

This latest thing doesnt focus without the flash, it comes up with a shakey hand warning saying that im moving the camera too much or some nonsense, however i have one of the steadiest hands from being a painter.. now if you put the flash on you get a lovely sharp image, but i dont want the flash on sometimes.. infact.. most of the time..

Why is it doing this.. is it anything photo technical as im not exactly into the details of it all.. are there settings i can change?

Does it only do it in low light or all of the time? In low light, it might be wanting a shutter speed too slow for you to handhold adequately. To test this, put it on a tripod and use the self timer with and without flash - see if there is a sharpness difference then.

If there is, it could be that the camera only uses a focus assist beam in low light when the flash is on and its missing the focus somehow?

Well, outside its fine without the flash, it doesnt show the shakey hand thing and the photos are sharp.. inside when it adjusts to the light without the flash and on a steady object it will take a sharp picture.. but it still gives the shakeyhand warning and uses a red light

edit: in answer to your question, no there is very little sharpness difference between flash and no flash when the camera is completely steady just different light levels

The shakey hand thing is probably a warning that the guideline handheld shutterspeed rule has been broken, or it has some kind of motion sensor built in.

If you think the flash isnt needed indoors or whatever, use a manual mode and tinker about until you get the shot you want rather than using the auto mode to guess for you :)
