Hello all,

I'm currently looking to buy a compact camera, budget is of around £500. I'm by no means a pro when it comes to taking shots, in fact I'm the total opposite!

It's just a camera I'm looking to use for when I go on holiday etc. I'm heading over to New Orleans In September so I'd love to have a decent camera to shoot with. I'm off over there to watch the Saints play American Football which I'm really looking forward too!

The downside of that is, apparently you're not allowed to take cameras with detachable lenses inside the stadium which is a real shame. Hence me looking for a quality compact.

I've been looking at the Canon Powershot G1X Mark 2 which I've seen float about around £500 mark & also the RX100 II. Although honestly, I don't know anything when it comes down to cameras... Are there better cameras in this price range?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Some of the best compacts are the Sony rx100 and the rx100 mk2

The mki can be around £300 and the mk2 over £400 , IMO there's little point going for a mk2 if you don't need a hot shoe and flip screen

They're both small and perfect for sticking in a pocket until needed

The downs sides to these are the focal length iirc is about 100mm equivalent field of view , so you won't get much close up action at the game but for most other shots they'll be great

There's also a mk3 coming out in the next few months which has a faster lens which means it will be better in low light but the trade off is it is only 70mm on the longest end so even less magnification, it will be expensive too but no one knows what it will be once prices settle after launch

Falling that you could get a superzoom bridge type camera but it will be bigger and heavier , you'll get closer to the action but may find shots blurry if you cant get shutter speed up enough depending on the available light

I'm off to Florida in September and I'll be taking an rx100
