Camera for my sister

My sister is getting into her photography, she especially like her (I mean my) Polaroid camera. She has a small Nikon compact but wants to move up to a Consumer SLR (I have a D70 and she likes it, bit big for her though).

Now what she needs to use it for is some Fashion photography and Gig photography, she doesn't have millions to spend, so the cheaper the better but it also needs to be simple and quite robust as she is prone to things going wrong...

I was thinking some 50mm f1.8 lens and a D40/50 camera. She was looking at a deal in a store with the D40 and an 18-55mm lens, I am dubious because its quite a cheap lens.

Any advice?

Perhaps a Bridge?

Can get a D40/D40x/D50 and a Nifty 50.

But the Fuji 6500fd is pretty good, and similar to a DSLR.

I use the D40 and i think its great, upgrading at some point though.

The 400D is good too, however you and her can then use eachothers lenses if both nikon.

to be honest, if she likes the D70 then a s/h one may well be a good bet - I've had one and it got me hooked on DSLRs (bloody thing!). If she has a D40 or similar (iirc), she won't be able to use auto focus on any of your lenses unless they have AF-S (or something like that, I don't really know a lot about the D40), that includes the nifty fifty. By 'bit big', how much do you mean? Could she get used to it?

Going from D70 > D80 is bit strange!! The D80 feels smaller in hand and it takes different memory card. The obivious upgrade for D70 owners is straight upto D200/D300.

D50 > D80 is more appropriate, you can use the same memory and it is the same size.
