Hi

Sorry I'm not a regular here but could do with some advice as i know absolutely nothing about cameras :)

My girlfriend is looking for a camera for general use.... Just something she can put in her handbag and is fairly small but takes a decent photo. I guess it will generally be used for holiday photos and days out so nothing too fancy needed. Looking to spend £100 to £150.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I realise this is more of an enthusiasts forum but hope someone may be able to advise me.

Thanks in advance.

Me and my girlfriend both have the Sony DSC-W80 (she has a pink one) and they take great pictures, they are also really fast, very low shutter lag. It uses a rechargable Lithium-Ion battery which last for ages and comes with a charger, I'd never buy a digital camera that uses AA's again. The screen is big and it is really easy to use, it uses a dial to change modes. It uses Sony MemoryStick Pro Duo which are really cheap plus the camera has some internal memory which is very handy if you accidently forget to put the memory stick in.

memorystick pro duo cheap? compared to sd and sdhc i really doubt that! looking around I can get 8gb of sdhc for about the same price as 4gb of memorystick - mainly because it's a sony only standard

fuji, canon, sony, nikon all have decent cameras in that range - get out and have a play (with the camera, not the girlfriend :) )

Well I got a 4GB MemoryStick Pro Duo for under £20 you just have to know where to get them from, the memory isn't really a big deal if you download your photos once in a while, don't think I've come close to filling it.

get out and have a play

This is how me and my girlfriend picked the DSC-W80, we had a play with loads of cameras. It was in Germany in a place called Saturn which is a huge electronics retailer over there and they actually have hundreds of cameras (amongst other things) on display for you to play with. I have never seen anything like it in the UK, the best is probably a camera shop but even they may only have a few models on display.

yup, and 8gb sdhc is under £20 too - half the price in this case. you just can't say memorystick is a cheap format when sd is half the price can you? only sony use it whilst sd is used by fuji, canon, nikon, casio, hitachi etc. etc. and in mp3 players, satnavs, pdas. there is just no validity in your argument as sd is the dominant flash memory storage full stop. this doesn't mean that sonys are bad cameras at all just to make the op aware that i feel that it isn't a cheap memory format
