Camera gorilla's, do you trust them?...

Howdy,

I'm currently using a D80, I don't know about other model DSLR's but it weighs quite a bit
I've often been in situations where I could have benefited from a gorilla but don't think I have the stones to hang my camera from one lol.

So I ask, who has had any experience with them, how do you rate them and are they trustworthy?

I wouldn't worry, gorillas are much stronger than you, I or even Freefaller!

They can be unpredictable and aggressive so I don't blame your trepidation, however if you spend some time with him/her it will eventually accept you as one of its own.

Gorillas aren't particularly smart so I doubt they could deceive you even if they tried.

Gorillapods are great, just make sure you get one rated for the weight of your camera + whatever the largest lens you want to use.

I've heard nothing but good things about Gorillapods! Should be fine with your D80.

I've got one but still to use it! Bought it for setting up my second camera behind the goal mouth at the footy but still to take advantage of it for a different kind of shot to my usual ones from the sidelines.

You'll need to look at either Joby's Gorillapod SLR or Gorillapod SLR Zoom I guess, the standard probably won't support sufficiently.

Yeah was looking at the Joby zoom ones, even though I probably wont use it with a zoom lens, but just in case I find myself using it lol

I bought a copy off the bay. I've not used it extensively such as hanging it upside down or in a precarious situation.

Pretty solid though to hold camera, flash and a 70-300 lens on a ballhead. Will try and get a pic for you if you want.

Gorillapod SLR's are great, supports my D5000 with Sigma 70-300 macro at full extension just fine, dont skimp on buying the normal one for little camera's it's only upto supporting little point an shoot jobbys

i have one and find the camera vibrates for a while after pressing the shutter, so i use the 10sec delay to prevent blur. Its great as a flash mount though.

could you attach some form of tether as well from the camera to the object you are hanging it from? Just to be double safe?

Just get a wireless or wired shutter release! Should be under £20 from the bay

Indeed, great for that, I've yet to see one which will support a D700 + 24-70 though so haven't tried with a camera on it.

Here's a quick pic I just took. It's got a Rednapper mini-ballhead (metal), Sigma 70-300 lens, Yongnuo flash hung upside down, was getting heavy holding with one hand and taking snap with the other! I reckon total weight is around 1.5 kg.

First time I've tried using the pod to hang a camera upside down but it gives me more reassurance it can cope.

I've got a GorillaPod SLR Zoom with the Ballhead which was bought as a present for me a few months back. I've actually really not used it much at all, I feel a bit disappointed with it.

Firstly, it's rated to be able to more than take the weight of my Canon 7D and 70-200, but it's not exactly stable. When using the ballhead, it's worse though, as it usually starts sinking, making the whole point of using a tripod useless.

The more worrying thing though is that when just bending it, one of the ball sockets always pops out. This has left me now thinking that there is really no way I would want to trust it for anything precarious.

I actually want to see if I can get the receipt to see if I can get it replaced, because I'm sure it shouldn't do that, especially given how little I've actually used it.

I dont trust mine unless im holding it, comes in handy to give you that bit of stability on railings/lamp post etc when your still holding the strap/body...

I use it to hold a flash too... if i want it in a place where a stand wont hold it.
