Hi Guys,

I’m trying to come up with a good camera and lens combination to take photos to be used in engineering documents and the like (photos of damaged components, wiring, and similar). With the level of sharpness needed it’ll have to be a DSLR with a good, hi-res sensor, and Macro lens however I’ve not done any macro work myself so I’m not entirely sure what the best options are.

Budget isn’t specified yet however the cheapest option that would work will obviously be necessary.

The only requirements I’ve been given so far are “at least 10x magnification” (I know that doesn’t really mean much). But in practical terms we need to be able to take photos of damaged wiring that will clearly show any damage in enough detail to tell how many layers of insulation and which individual cores are affected etc.

Ability to work in low light and in relatively confined spaces would also be beneficial.

So if anyone has any suggestions it’d be helpful.

Cheap would be a Canon xxD with a suitable macro lens, probably in the 100mm region.

If I was doing it I'd probably pick a 6D with a Canon EF 100mm Macro.

If that isn't close enough then some extension rings would increase the magnification, 10x is however, meaningless.

Manged to locate a D7200 and a Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro in another toolkit, which will do the job (hopefully). Not quite as close (as magnified) as we need, but I can't see another way of doing things apart from getting a digital microscope or similar. Getting sharp images of individual wire cores in an installed damaged cable isn't all that easy.

Thanks anyway.
