There's some temporary traffic lights on wheels near me for roadworks where each side of the road takes turns to go. On top of each traffic light is a very small sort of oval shaped black camera. I took a liberty this time (I don't normally) of going through the light just after it went red. Can I assume the cameras are just traffic monitoring rather than registering a red light offence? Please say yes, lol.

They aren't cameras. They're proximity sensors. If you stop too far away sometimes they won't change, roll forward slightly they pick you up and will change.

The sensors detect movement and I think the lights can be setup to either operate on a timer or traffic basis (i.e. have the sensor detect when there is a car approaching and go green if the other side is clear)

We had a set fail on a busy road in town the other day. Was 9AM rush hour and was mental. Both sides were failing to change so it turned into a gauntlet of who was quickest to get into the middle section.

Thanks guys, so I'm ok then.

Why exactly do you think it's appropriate to run a red?

Yes it's wrong. I wouldn't normally, and never have before. Temporary lights take so long to change so I took the liberty before the opposite traffic started moving. But I didn't keep anyone waiting as I was right behind the car in front.

Can hand on heart say I've never run a red on temporary lights - even when I'm coming home from work in the early hours and only person around for miles as tempting as it is in those circumstances. I see an increasing number do it.

Former work colleague went through a red near where I live now, somewhat notorious junction for incidents involving people jumping a red light due to visibility and traffic patterns, and nearly killed a pregnant lady (fortunately both survived) - claims he hit an oil patch but none was ever found. So not something I take lightly.
