Hey all.

Was just thinking of how much are camping holidays are these days. I was thinking of getting the family, 4-5A and 3-4C and hoping cos none of us have any money we can do camping for a holiday this year to get away for a week when the kids are off school later in the year.

Any ideas. Were up the north east so somewhere that isnt too far and hopefully has a lake and they allow camp fires maybe with toilet and shower facilities.

Like i said were broke and most dont work so, is it possible? Also what kinda stuff do you take to em apart from tents and sleeping bags and maybe a portable gas stove tho maybe it might be nice to make a fire to cook on i dunno.

Just last few hols were at butlins and thought camping must be cheaper and its somit diff and hopefully kids will enjoy it.

The sun caravan holidays are pretty cheap, my parents use them and if you're careful on location then they're not a chav filled hell hole. They upgraded and still got a £350 caravan for £150, for a week.

Mine? If you get a decent one they're actually pretty good. Last year they were on the coast of south wales with their caravan right next to the sea with some really nice hills and long beaches to walk on, a few alright towns within a short drive, just stay away from any on-site 'entertainment', they went for a look once and it was crap.

The thought of a massive family camping holiday in a place 'maybe with shower and toilet facilities' in the north east of England fills me with dread. I'm sure there's some lovely scenery and beaches etc...but still, not for me! *shudder*

The caravan my parents were in had two toilets and a shower, it's floorplan was bigger than my house!

Not my kind of thing either, but on a budget and for a family holiday they can be quite good, it's what you make of it I guess.

I hope for the sake of your wife and kids that the "maybe" applied to the "allow camp fires maybe" part of the sentence rather than "maybe toilet and shower facilities" ;)

I was thinking that in Scotland, with their different laws, it's possible to go wild camping i.e. not on a camp site, for free. Not that I'd recommend that for a family holiday though lol.

Camping isn't as cheap as you'd think unfortunately.
Doing it while most of the family aren't working will be interesting - a lot of sites charge per person per night and it soon adds up to quite a figure.

If you're going to do it a few times, wouldn't it be better and work out cheaper to get all the gear and go setup anywhere - i.e not a campsite.

One of my friends does this, hikes then sets up a long distance from anywhere, collects water from streams etc. Suppose with kids it could be a nightmare!

I know you're from the NE, there are a few good sites over there, Golden square which isn't too far from Malton is good, Haggerston castle is good too but i don't know if you can pitch a tent there, but my preference would be to drive over to the Lake district, 2 hour drive, you've got so much more choice there and it's prettier. You'll get good deals in go outdoors in Stockton on tees for your camping gear, or, look on ebay, you might get some bargains this time of year.

Alternatively, the sun are doing £9.50 hols atm, it's £9.50 per person (minimum of 4 people), you get a caravan and a massive choice of destinations, you pay extra for your entertainment passes (abnout £5 oper person per trip) and your gas / electric which is cheap enough. If you haven't got the camping gear and looking to do it on the cheap this would be my suggestion.

Why is it lucky? Is this because I said your football posters were worse than Magnolia's threads :D?

No, but funny you should mention that again.

You do have a knack that regardless of an OPs request / post you turn the subject onto you rather than respond to the question being asked. In this case the OP asks if there are any cheap places people know of for a cheap camping holiday and all you do is say that camping fills you with dread......not what the OP is asking at all.

As for the poster i bought of one of my photos, its for me and no one else. So even if your wife would kill you if you bought it, you didn't and has nothing to do with you or your wife......I know i posted two other canvases later on but that was for a couple of clients. I still bought them, but with my photography of 'boring football pitches' i make a nice wee profit off them. but again you wanted the attention to be back onto you!

Wild camping can be really good, unlike at a campsite you can pick a spot miles from anyone else. It's not the sort of thing I'd want to plan in advance to spend a week doing. The weather can be unpredictable and I've only done this planning a day or two in advance when I can see a couple of nights with good conditions. You can get away with much cheaper/lighter gear when everywhere is dry and the nights are warm.

I've been camping around North Yorkshire/Lancashire but there wasn't much for kids to do.
I'd look at Kielder Forest park, maybe hire a boat, go fishing.
Found at least one site that charges by the tent, don't count on any fires though, they won't want the possible grief or the burnt turf.

I doubt you will find many licensed campsites that allow open campfires. Allowing the general public to start fires around tents is just asking for trouble, plus the site would soon turn into a charred mess.
