Can 360 play avi files?

Yes will need to have the latest dashboard update and download the codec pack
There is no codec pack. This is not a PC, it is a console :)
As title

Thanks, Mark

AVI is a file container, so it depends what the file is encoded as.

"Most" of th AVI files people normally refer to are divx or xvid encoded content. These play back (with some caveats) on the 360 since the fall 07 dashboard update. (you will be prompted to download this update automatically if your 360 is connected to Live).

you can find a lot more detailed information in this quite excellent (imo) FAQ MS posted:

Do you think they will expand the capabilities of the 360 in the future? Right now it's limited to Xvid and DivX I believe? And various Audio Codecs, Which again I believe includes AC3.

Now that should cover most I would have thought. But do you think MS will release updates to say, Updated Xvid and Divx, Or older Xvid and Divx that may not be working. Other audio codecs and Video modes such as MKV or OGM?

Just wondering if people are expecting more media updates in the future, or whether the general consensus is we've got what we're gonna get, don't push it. :p

Pretty sure that there is an additional download from marketplace for some file extensions, even after the full dash update.

It will prompt you to download it in any case.

Yeah, it's called the "Media Extender" I believe. And i'm guessing it is essentially a pack of codecs. :p

Very unlikely we will get mkv support on 360 or ps3. Doubt we will get older codecs added (which is fair enough). I could perceive a future divx/xvid codec being added as I think both ps3 and 360 have signed a deal with divx so they would be able to get updates, if they see fit.

The problem with the old stuff is that every man and his dog was encoding files with different standards a few years back and they will never be able to support all of those, whereas these days I guess content is usually encoded by a fixed-ish amount of groups, who encode to a certain standard/format/bitrate.

Weird, I have not been prompted for anything like this (although I have not tried more than maybe 5 files on the 360 so could well be mistaken). cheers.

FFDshow player is a standalone decoder of many Codecs is it not. Do they do it legitametly? As I was under the impression that software worked by decoding/encoding using it's own algorythms, and not actual Divx/Vxid software.

Could PS3/360 not do something along those lines? Ofcourse I'm just theorising here. :p

Oh it's fully possible (the hardware on the ps3 and 360 is more than upto the task), but in terms of official support, very unlikely. Things like FFDshow and VLC are all open source so unlikely to appear in any official capacity, imo
