Can a 1070.......?

Take a look at lots of gaming benches with all three cards and then decide. See if the extra fps is worth the extra money. You could also wait for Vega to see if it can perform....if it does then Nvidia will drop the prices of those cards. If it doesn't match up then buy one quick as Nvidia will put the prices up. :p

The answer is yes easily and no, not even close!

It depends what games you want to play.

For me a gtx1080 is a 1080p card given it can't run the games I want to play at 1440/60 ultra. Your mileage may vary.

sorry for this vague question so please go easy on me.
Can a 1070 run 2k, high/ultra 144hz.
Many thanks in advance

Probably. I mean my 980ti gets 90+fps in many games at 1440p (2.5k), so I'd assume that a 1070 would get close to 144fps at 1080p (aka 2k).

Unless OP meant 1440p when they said 2k (no worries, a common mistake made by many). You may have to turn down settings and some games really depend on the CPU too. The most intensive settings usually include things like anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion, shadows, etc.

In which case I'd suggest that your best bet would be a 1080/1080ti for trying to reach such goals. Or just wait till next year for the 1170/2070 (whatever they call it), which will likely give you the performance you're looking for and hopefully won't break the bank while it does so.

I have a slightly overclocked 1070. Use it 90% for Oculus Rift gaming. This is with Ryzen 1600 @ 3.85
Only a small handful of games can't manage to keep 90 fps, so ASW kicks in and drops to 45 fps, so I've been getting real close to buying a 1080 Ti lately.

2 reasons keep stopping me:
1. A 1080 Ti may not be able to keep 90 fps in games like Asseto Corsa with 24 cars on the track or The Climb with details turned up.
2: AMD Vega

If I knew for definite a 1080 Ti could cope I'd probably just buy one.

I have a GTX1070, I bought it so I can game on 1080p for another four years as 1080p is fine for me, plus I have not played on any better resolution so I am not missing out seeing as I wouldn't know what it looks like anyway.
