Hi i have a Athlon II X2 Dual Core 250 AM3 processor lying about and need to order a new motherboard so i was hoping that i could get a AM3+ and use this cpu then upgrade to a AM3+ later on.

So will this work okay or do i need a new cpu as well?

Thanks

Robert

Look into the motherboard's manufacturer website you want to buy, and look into the CPU support list..
Since you didn't provided any spec on the possible motherboard, then it's hard to say..
In general, all AM3+ motherboards "should" support AM3 CPUs, but sometimes, manufacturers can add some gliches/instructions under the Bios to prevent running some types/models of CPU..

Best regards.. :)

Always best to verify with the board manufacturer however the AM3+ socket is physically backwards compatible and I used to run a PII 965 in a 990XA-UD3.

Considering Bulldozer is a joke, I say you'd better off just sell the CPU and pocket the cash...and get whatever is better in the future rather than getting your tied to AMD.

If you want a computer just for browsing office and light gaming, you can get the GA-78LMT-S2P new for under £35 which supports your processor and all other parts would be interchangeable. AM3+ is not a dead socket and upgrades beyond Bulldozer are in the pipeline. Depends how much you want to spend but I bought a 990X motherboard for £50 secondhand recently.

The thing is, the Athlon II X2 250 itself probably worth no more than £30 second hand, so it's questionable whether or not it is actually worth investing around it.

If just want cheap set up for doing light tasks, then should look into getting a cheap 2nd hand 700/800 chipset motherboard for under £30 or something; but investing on expensive 900 chipset board for the sake of "future-proofing" is a bit pointless, considering how far AMD is behind Intel at the moment, and the Bulldozer being slower than the Phenom II IPC wise. With the 700/800 chipset board, there's still the option to upgrade to Phenom II (2nd hand) in the future.
