Got an aluminum case side panel that needs a window. I was told by a metal fabrication place that they can do it with their equipment. I know they do CNC punching but not sure about cutting a squar shape with roanded edges. Can this be done by CNC punching equipment?

Quick answer is yes.

They will punch small rectangles along the length of the cut, when it comes to the corners the die will change and become circle, half-moon shape or similar and proceed to do the corners.

Should be easy enough if its just a simple window. For more complex shapes get it laser cut, or waterjet.

Dont forget to mask up both sides of your with tape, that way any problems of scuffing marking etc, can be put down to them.

Ahhh I get it now:)
I almost forgot about masking both sides! That goes on the "to do" list thank you.
Have got any experience with this kind of thing? Will this CNC punching bend or deform the panel?(It is about 2mm thick aluminium)

With a CNC mill you can cut any shape you like!

Its basically a drill bit that cuts as you move it along the panel, the smaller the bit the finer details you'll get.
A basic window you wouldn't even write a program for, easy stuff really, its just finding someone with the time that won't charge the earth.....

:D

Oh I think he has more time than work TBH :)
He wanted it to do today! But I am still at the planning stage. Don't want a standard window but there is nothing else anyway!

Its not a CNC mill, its a CNC punch totally different. I wouldnt advise cutting sheet with a mill anyway. Get it laser cut or waterjet and the shape you want is the limit of your imagination. You can get side panels laser cut for £25-50 notes.

As for it cutting 2mm sheet, no problamo.

Yeah I first looked for a water jet place, they wanted £80/hour! and minimum charge is £60.
Bit high for me:)
I have a lot of ideas bouncing at the moment just not enough funds. Have to get at least part of it done and then do the rest step by step.
I was going to get the window done on saturday but am going to delay that for a week or so and get some aluminium sheets for some other ideas ;)
So I can get them cut all together.
Will be making a project log with lots of pics :)
