Can a cpu's MC stop working in dual channel mode?

I bought a second hand san diago 3700+ a few months back but didn't have a chance to use it due to motherboard problems etc.

I recently got a new motherboard, but then found out it wasn't compatable with my ram (abit at8 and gskill zx), so i sold the ram and got some geil ultra x bh5/utt.

This runs fine in single channel mode (ram in slots 2+3) but refuses to work stable in dual channel mode (slots 3+4). This is despite me trying many timing changes, voltages etc. How likely is it that the processors memory controller is broke in terms of dual channel operation?

well i wouldnt have thought its the mc that is duff (i assume the cpu is at stock?)

Boot in single channel and memtest the sticks, if it throws uo any errors rma the ram

the ram is p95 and memtest for windows stable in single channel, but not in dual. I did manage to get dual channel super pi 32m stable, but it throws up errors in memtest and prime95. I think the problem is either the ram settings, a compatability issue, or the cpu's MC - and I'm leaning to the latter.

I think its unlikely that your CPU is knackered. Those things are nearly impossible to break.
