Can a good powersupply increase performance?

Hello all,

I just installed a brand new Antec Truepower 2.0 - 480w in a fairly old system. An althon 2400xp, 1GB knockabout ram, 9800pro, 3HDD's and 1 DVD-RW. Bit of an overkill I know...

However, before these, the system has always had steaming hissing piles of poo unbranded powersupplys in, and always seemed to feel pretty sluggish and slow. (Not so much after an clean windows install, but it wouldnt take long to get back to it). Now, having just installed this new powersupply, I think i've just witnessed me quickest boot to windows ever and the whole "feeling" of the OS seems to have perked up a bit...

Is this just me imagining things, or can a top notch power supply really cause a performance increase?

I can't think of any reason why, more stable power may cause your overclock potential to increase, but at the same settings it shouldn't make a difference.

Well, i'm not talking like a major life changing performance increase. Maybe just slightly faster loading's of programs and things? Maybe because the HDD's are getting a more stable power supply?

... I don't really know, was just a thought :)

i doubt it. your more likely to see a more stable machine and as minstadave said your overclocking potential may slightly increase

Heh, overclocking. No chance. The motherboard is a little bit rubbish. Ah well, suppose that answers that one. At least it means, when we finally get around to getting a new system (My dad says after vista is released!) We've got a decent powersupply and wont have to buy one then :D

Stability is all that should increase, I suppose that could have a knock-on effect in that if the system is less stable it may underclock itself but I think that very unlikely.

You should also edit the swearing out of your first post(around where you mention the PSU). :)

People are missing an obvious point here. Did the PSU have go faster stripes?

Actually it has go faster air holes! ;)

Sorry about the swearing, i've changed it.
