Spent all last night and this morning wondering why my new build wouldnt post and i managed to wire down the problem to my old C Drive which i think may have been damaged in my last comp after something started to smoke out!

Anyway, it appears that whenever i have the power plug plugged into my old harddrive nothing will post. Once i unplug this HDD everything boots up fine. I didnt realise that a HDD could cause all these problems, was expecting it to post but not find the HDD.

Anyone share my view

But my main question is can a HDD really cause a rig to not boot?

Yes.. A DVD drive could do the same.. lots off things can make it not boot..

Definitely.

If any of the components connected to a decent PSU is shorted internally, the PSU should refuse to switch on!

Check the HDD on another strand of power cable - just in case you have a faulty wire.

Definately appears to be the HDD on its own! Tried the new PSU on my old computer and everything powered up but no graphics  Not sure whether to keep the CPU, Ram and motherboard or jus dump it all!
