Can a Motherboard toast HDD & SSD's?

Currently completed a new build in Dec. I've had to replace my OCZ SSD since it died last week (blue screen>failed>reinstall windows>died again>used as secondary drive>dies after 10 mins or anything over 1GB of data transfer on any PC).

Now I'm using a new M4 replacement SSD and my 1TB secondary HDD has just died to, haven't been able to test it much to see if i can fix it.

When i plug it in while the computer is on everything goes SLOW+MO, if i turn the computer on with it in it takes about 15 mins to get to the windows screen......

Anyone got any ideas?

...not really my area of expertise....but i'd first be thinking psu.....far more likely to be frying things, maybe random power surges on the 12v rail....you tired the broken ssd in another pc?

yeah tried it in 2 different PC's. Exactly the same problems in my main computer. Surely if there was being power surges, the HD's are the last thing to fry. GPU, CPU first surely?

Yeah maybe, both were from my previous rig. The SSD wasnt THAT old..... but i have read a lot about the OCZ Vertex 2 failing randomly.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Sorry, I've read that a few times and can't make sense what check you have and haven't done. Are you saying you checked the HHD and SSD in two seperate machines and it failed but all circumstances originate from the first and suspected machine?

Are you running the PC behind a decent surge protector?

Check your is your PSU is functioning as expected before you come to any conclusions. Use my guide here:

Yes all originated from same machine, and I've had a SSD and HDD die in the SAME week. I'm using a normal surge protector that comes on the multi-power cable thing. I've never had any problems with my old PC like this.

How old is the psu? any problems before? And with a power surge it does not necessarily follow that the gpu, cpu would go first, for instance if your psu has multiple rails you could be running the hard drives off of one that is faulty...or simply the surges could be minor and have yet to affect other components...

Interested why you think its the motherboard?

The only pc component that I've seen ruin other ones are power supplies. Always worth getting a decent brand imo

Have you tried different SATA cables and ports, is it possible to test the drives on another machine.

Ok this is messed up, its been 2 days later with the HDD unplugged...and I just plugged it back in and its working fine with all the data that was on it before.

W T F? :@
