I do love a Tablet. I also love my laptop. 11" Netbook.

Can a tablet replace a laptop?

I like the idea of downloading files for my pc or family PC's on my laptop like drivers and patches etc. Can this be done on a Tablet? I quite like the Samsung Tablet range.

I would love a tablet where i could download files for my family PC's or game patches etc.

Surface.

To elaborate, I've not owned a laptop since getting my first Surface Pro 64GB. Since then I've had a Surface Pro 2 512GB, and now a Surface Pro 3 256GB. I paid for a perpetual AMI DuOS (<£10, now on Lollipop too) license for anything I need Android-wise, and that's me set.

I just wanna reiterate on this. I have a surface pro 2 256GB and it's been perfect for me for the last year. Love the size, power and convenience.

I've a Toshiba Encore 8 (the older better speced one) its replaced most of my portable general use - with a stand + keyboard and mouse (and/or keyboard with touchpad) it replaced a laptop fine for my uses. (Most of the time don't even bother with the accessories though) the only thing that is a bit of a drawback is the smaller and/or cheaper tablets tend to charge via the USB port and not always like charging + using peripherals at the same time so a tablet with separate charging port helps.

At the 10'' and 11'' sizes, a tablet can totally replace a laptop. Above that, defiantly not.

To me a laptop needs a mouce(trackpad could understandably be replaced by a touchscreen) and keyboard.

Forgot to mention, that you WOULD want a tablet that also has a keyboard with it. I.e. Asus Transformer. Was a brilliant tablet/laptop for £300.

My Mrs has a iPad Air with a Logitech keyboard which doubles as a case, it's good but it's no laptop.

But she seems to love it, I think it's more a habit thing, I bet if you asked a load of teens the same question they would favour the tablet.

It boils down to what you want to do, a tablet is lighter, has better battery life and can do 90% of the things a laptop can, I just ordinarily like to use the other 10%!

ive got what is probably an older generation asus memo pad hd 7", although its had some abuse of late it was a good replacement for laptop or desktop for nearly a year till i went back to laptop and desktop..

i love my app gaming so its perfect for that and movie apps and handy when on the move as intended, but all i use it for now is to download movies(legally) to transfer to pc as i find that quicker and now i found xbmc to run nicer(maybe an illusion) on android then windows then i might use it for that..

but pc based wasnt the sole reason i dont use the tablet much now, the other month i got a iphone 5 and an iphone to properly experience and the same games i played on android run much better on iphone..

basically the point is, yes a tablet can replace, but then it depends on what os and what you use it for, any mobile device is limited compared to a desktop/laptop either way.

I've got a case with keyboard/trackpad to go with my Windows tablet and for all intents and purposes it doubles as a laptop (unless you need a bigger screen) and will also plug into an external display via HDMI, specs wise its comparable to a mid-range 2007 desktop PC aside from the GPU which is is more 2005 era performance wise though has DX11, etc. capabilities. gets a good 9 hours battery life even playing proper HD video and even manages close to half that playing 3D games (though IIRC tends to throttle a bit after about an hour of playing a GPU heavy game).

The Surface Pro 3 is the first for me that did.

The 12" screen and its special aspect ratio make it usable.

My previous Surfaces were not ideal for me. The new screen size makes it work.

Have to echo the above on the Surface Pro 3. I find I can use as my daily work machine, in place of my P35k, and then sit on the sofa in the evening with it, in place of the iPad I used to use.
Fantastic piece of kit :)
