Have you tried doing a repair install?

Help, please! I'm not quite sure what the problem is, but I'll explain it. OK, I've reinstalled my OS (?) but when I tried to install drivers and a utility disc, my CD drive couldn't read anything at all, although the disc can be read on another PC. So I copied the content from the CD to my iPod.

When installing drivers from the iPod everything seemed fine, but when I tried to go to Control Panel > System, the window appeared for a second and then closed. When I plugged in my iPod, it performed AutoPlay and then the PC shut down and restarted. After the restart, my taskbar and start menu had changed to a Windows Classic lookalike (but not exactly); the My Computer icon is blank, and when I go to My Computer > C: drive, it only shows the My Pictures and My Music folders. The same thing happens when I click on my iPod, although I can use the folder listing on the left to navigate to the files.

Okay, so I then tried to install the latest Windows updates, but this finished with about 7 failed updates and restarted. This time, Windows didn't start and just keeps restarting over and over again! So is there anyone who can help me, please? Thanks.
There, that's better :) You're lucky I'm suffering from insomnia again!

Like Burnsy says, I would try a repair install from the Windows CD. It sounds like there's a big problem with the XP installation. Alternatively, as it sounds like a fresh install (from what I could decipher), why don't you try installing Windows again?
