Can anybody help me please

I bought an ati 6950 from overclockers last monday

finally got around to installing it today, and am having issues

my system is

asus p5n-e sli
q6600
ocz 750 psu (bought at same time)
windows 7 pro

So my issues. Card goes in and windows starts, but with no graphic disaplay - Eg uses generic driver. it spots i have a 6950 in and installs driver (i had latest catylist driver)

then windows restarts and then goes into restart / repair mode

start a repair, it seems very slow, then after a few minutes ( i am going to estimate 10 minutes ) the fans on the graphic card go crazy and pc losses signal.

Tried it a few times and its the same every time.

So i had a quick look on google (on other pc of course) to find somebody else had to resinstall windows to get the card to work and then it was fine... i can live with that so i try.

same issue on resinstall,. after abotu 10 minutes the card goes crazy and loses signal to the monitor

Can Anybody give me any advice please. thanks

I know you have a new power supply but it could be a power issue.

When the HD 6950 isn't getting enough power it just sits there with the fan(s) at full speed.

Normally the system won't boot in that state.

Have you made sure the power connectors are securely connected to the card?

Also check that the card is sitting properly in the PCI-E slot.

yeah I have checked that the power is plugged in firmly.

Weird thing is. the card has 1x 6 pin power and 1 x8 pin all documentation I can find states it requires 2 x 6 pin ( including the ati website)

I havent tried to reseat it (i can do) but I thought if eithter of those had been the issue, it woudl not have started in the first place

So have you fitted a 6 pin and an 8 pin?

If that's what it has then that's what it needs.

Some souped-up HD 6950's, such as the Sapphire TOXIC, need a 6 pin and an 8 pin.

yeah i fitted both 6 pin and 8 pin.

and just so i was sure, at one point i took the extra 2 out so it was 2 x6. wouldnt start up (wich confirmed my thought that it had an 8 pin so needed an 8 pin)

it is an asus hd 6950 directcuII if that helps lol

I am curently trying a system restore. which has been going for abotu 20 mins (longer than the usual 10 mins and crazy fan) but dosent seem to be getting anywhere. windows just says attempting repairs

edit. that failed- windows said it couldnt autmatically repair

Something has stuffed up your Windows installation.

Are you sure you haven't disturbed any of the cables to your HDD/SSD?

Perhaps go back to using whatever graphics card you had before and see if the problems go away.

It wouldn't hurt to make sure you have the latest BIOS for the motherboard, even though the latest is is from 2009.

the windows instal died when it detected the 6950. but im not bothered about that, i only reinstalled about 2 weeks ago, so not bothered about losing the instal (keep all data on a sperate hard drive anyway)

but it wont even install a new instal of windows. sits for ages on the blank screen and then gets to the select language etc screen.

then it gets to the setup up is starting screen, then after a few minutes card goes crazy, loses signal - i think my initial 10 minutes was inacurate, is probably closer to 20

there doesent seem to be anything stupid im doing, so im now leaning towards a fault on either the card or the psu.

Was really hoping somebody would come up with some reason for this happening, and give me a way to get around it.

You need to rule one or the other out, so either try a different PSU or gfx card and see if the problem persists, once you know what the problem is, you can concentrate on getting a solution

got a little bit further.

Swapped the power supply (borrowed a friends) for a 50 quid 700 what modula t

manager to get all the way through a windows 7 install. but the moment i install the drivers for the card, BSOD

reinstalled from scratch twice, and same each time.

this is getting incredibly frustrating.

have just read some body had similair problem with the 1gig version and it turned out to be their mouse driver (they had a razor) I haev a styx

i have just taken my styx off and out on a crappy microsoft usb mouse (downloading latest catalyst driver at the moment) will let you know in a min

edit

nope exaclty the same, the moment the driver goes in, BSOD and reboot cycle
