can anyone explain why crysis runs better with aa than it does without on my system?

when i play crysis at max setting i get a fair amount of slowdown, i saw here and on some other forums that people with my graphics card (4870x2) can max it & have 4xAA but i thought that either they were talking rubbish or that they had overclocked

well i thought id give it a try with the AA and to my suprise it is a lot somoother than it was without @ 1680 by 1050 :confused:

can anyone explain why this is?

well i havent actually done any benchmarks with or without & i dont know how

if you tell me how to run one i will, im thinking now that maybe the lowest framerate is staying the same but the highest is lower with the AA to its giving it the impression of being smooth :confused:

i could be talking out of my arse tho

That sounds quite possible tbh.

a lot of games are made with the intent of running well under AA & AF, as that is such a standard thing for us users to do now. The byproduct of that being that the games end up running a bit worse with none applied.

I'm leaning towards the latter

There is a benchmark tool, you need to root around in the Crysis install directory somewhere.

Crysis is not one of those for most people.

Could be just the way his vid card drivers have been made then, as the 4870x2 is so new and crysis is so well used in benchmarks, ATI tried to get the card to run Crysis as good as poss.

With AA the performance feels smoother as there is less variable framerate, you don't go from 60fps to 25fps and back but most likely it is constantly ~30fps

For some reason Crysis still feels smooth at lowish framerates.

yeah the motion blur really helps it feel smooth.

same here, very strange but happens. I also find that if i lower the settings too much i got worse fps, then with them to the cards full capability (which was high/very high).
