I thought I knew which of the new breed of mini solid-state laptops I was going to treat myself to a month or so ago but having not looked in this forum for a while I'm pretty confused about what products are now available and what's widely considered to be the best!

I don't really want to spend much over 300 pounds but can't work out what's coming out, what's the best bang-for-the-buck etc?

MSI Wind? Asus Eee Pc, something by Acer? What's the score? I'd like to buy sooner rather than later but don't want to miss out for the sake of waiting a few weeks!

So, what's the best buy at the moment up to around 300 pounds? Sorry if this is double-post-muppetry but there's loads of threads which are several pages long and I'm not sure which ones are worth reading!

Thanks

depends what your gonna use it for i guess, you can get these mini laptops for under £300 with tiny screens and no cd drive and small storage low cpu power, great for internet and general mucking about or for £50 quid more get a 15.4 dual core with dvd -rw bigger hd better gfx etc the choice is yours.

The smallest ones are the Asus EeePc 700 range, Slightly larger with the 8.9 screen are the 900 and 901 (901 has Atom, 6 cell battery), Acer Aspire (3 cell battery), and the forthcoming Dell E. Next size up are the ones with the 10" screen like the Eeepc 1000 and MSI Wind and Advent. HP Mini note is very poor value for money but has the nicest chasis. The 10" screenies obviously weigh a little more. Then you need to decide if you need Windows or Linux OS. The 10" are getting a little close in weight and size to the 12.1" full function laptops for me.

I've just got myself a 901 for surfing via mobile broadband weight/battery life were my most important considerations. I never switch it off during the day, just put it on standby and chuck it in the rucksack so SSD's were an advange over HD for me as I wasn't too interested in overall storage capacity.

I just bougt the MSI Wind clone from a well known shop. So far I think it is brilliant and for me th best of the bunch.
Think it will be light and portable enough for my use but the extra screen size just gives it an edge. Performance from the Atom chip seems good so far.
The original Eee PC just seemed too small and the Acer One looks good on the face of it but some reviews I have read question the build quality and certainly handling one it felt less substantial than the Wind clone.
The Wind does however have a conventional hard disk.

I'm liking the look of the Asus EEE 901 at the moment, 6 cell battery, XP and 1GB, plus it's smaller than the Acer One. I think some of these with the 'nearly full sized keyboards' are risking getting too big. The charm of the original 700/701 was it being nearly the size of a DVD case, for me anyway.

If you don't mind Linux and 512mb ram, and having something a bit bigger, the lowest Acer One in the range is good value and looks smart in blue.

Also depends on how much storage you're after.

Think i'm going to get this little beauty when they are in stock.

Asus Eee PC 1000 Intel Atom 1.6GHz 10.0" Laptop - XP Home - Black (EEEPC1000H-BK007X)

I'm having the same problem at the moment ... I've narrowed it down to the 901 or the 1000, in the Linux variant to get the most solid state storage. Then if I can't get on with the Linux distribution being used I'll put on XP and still have the increased storage.

I'd do what memyselfandi is planning, the extra 8GB storage will come in handy. Unless the pre installed XP install/restore disc is a trimmed down unique EEE XP install, with reduced storage writes.

I tested a Asus out in a store and love it.
The 901's maybe better value for the £ when the 1000 finally is in stock. We shall see.
