Can anyone help me with this computer problem?

Trying to help a neighbour out here who is working on a thesis and the computer has started playing up. Symptoms: computer fires up and displays windows 7 logo and appears to be loading windows 7 but then the screen goes blank - everything appears to be working and the monitor light is still on...could this be a video fault/drivers issue, I think the motherboard is an ASUS I will check the motherboard numbers.
Any help and guidance appreciated.

What happens if you try and boot in safe mode?

Thank you I think I've solved the problem for now using system restore from the boot disk - I have also turned off automatic updates until a fix has been created for the update that happen on or around the 8th of August. At least she will hopefully be able to finish her thesis...
