Hi,

I recently had to RMA my Ultima Viper system to OcUK because of a faulty power supply. I got it back and then had to RMA it again because it seems that when the power supply went, it took the graphics card out with it.

So I've had it back for a couple of weeks now, but it won't boot past the Windows 7 password screen when any GFX drivers are installed. I tried posting in my original RMA thread in the Customer Service forums, but I have not had a response for nearly two weeks! I can get into Windows in safe mode fine and, if no GFX drivers are installed, then I can get into Windows normally. The card is an NVIDIA GTX 480.

Somebody on another forum suggested trying to run Windows using 16-colour mode instead of 32-colour mode, but this didn't appear to work. Also, another person suggested trying both ports on the GFX card, which I did. Still, this did not work.

Here is a cut and paste of my post from the original thread:

'It gets to the Windows 7 log-in screen, lets you put in your password and then looks as if it is going to continue; then it freezes. Sometimes the screen will go dark as if it is about to display the desktop, but it never quite makes it. More often though, the freeze happens when the whole screen is still the turquoise colour. The little circle icon stops spinning and the system becomes totallly unresponsive, forcing me to do a hard reset.

Hope we can get this sorted. Having to run an old Vista machine isn't much fun! I want my baby working properly again...'

Can anyone give me an idea on how to sort this out? I don't mind having to do a format, but I am wondering if there are any other things that I can try first...

If the PSU took the graphics card with it, it may have damaged the motherboard or CPU as well. As above let OcUK deal with it.

So even though I can get into Windows fine and do everything normally as long as no NVIDIA GFX drivers are installed, you still reckon it's something more serious?

Damn, what on earth did you DO to that thing?
This is why I've been rather paranoid in selecting the best PSU possible. Anything less and I could be waving goodbye to en expensive system...

Was playing games when the PSU went 'pop' and tripped the whole house supply. It's a Corsair 650w that OcUK have assured me is well up to the job. I did wonder though if my Xonar Essence STX plus the GTX 480 were a bit much for it.

At the moment I am running an old Vista machine that I built some years ago but it's slow as hell. So want to get my baby back up and running.

So, any ideas?

Great! So now this topic has gone dead like my other one?

I got a nice email from OcUK informing me of their Christmas deals, but all I want is my system working properly again.

So what am I to do?

Someone here MUST have an idea as to what is going on with my computer? I really, really want it working agian before Christmas, if that is possible... :D

RMA it thats why you pay premium prices for prebuilt systems.

They will probably just re-image the HD.

Give OcUK a ring in the morning and explain everything as you've done here. They may just tell you to go ahead and reinstall your OS, but make sure and check with them that you won't invalidate your warranty by doing so. Hope you get it sorted mate.
