Can anyone help?

Looks like no output from the graphics chip, does the screen come on like that or does it start off white and then gradually fade in the lines?

It comes on instantly with the lines. However the longer you leave, they do start to grow ever so slightly... but it's pretty much straight away.

I do get an image on an external display, so surely this rules out the GPU.

No, not necessarily, the Nvidia gpu does give this sympton quite often and can throw people out, fine on external but not internal display, it can still be the gpu which I would go for here as screens don't usually fail in this way.

I agree, it's rare to see screens failing like this. It's an ATI chip however. A guy on the original thread seems convinced he has seen this before and it is indeed the screen.

I really don't want to spend the money on a screen to discover that it isn't the problem.
