yeah they are, all of them in the UK are actually.
we have a large pond close to our dads house, on a bend, a car crashed into it, leaving oil/petrol/ greese etc in it.the environment agency came and cleaned it. there were loads of greater crested newts (they look like mini dragons!!!!!) kicking around, that we collected and bought to our pond until they had finished dredgeing the pond, getting all the crap out of it and then waited till it filled back up. then popped them all back onto the reeds
You aren't allowed to sell the common newt but you can kill them if you want. The proposed Heysham-M6 link road was shelved because of Great Crested Newts. Five years later and they have decided on a new route.

aaah, yeah, i think your right actually, i think its the trade that protects all of them, didnt know it was legal to kill them though =( Newts are boss!
