I have plusnet fibre and the router is complete rubbish, I have put up with it until now but I think its on its last legs. Wi-Fi keeps dropping out etc.

I believe I need a VDSL router? Can anyone recommend a modem/router combo? I don't really have any requirements I suppose VPN support would be nice but not essential. Just something reliable that works.. Budget around £70? It doesn't need to be anything special.

Cheers

It has worked fine for about a year and has done the job good enough for me. But yes there seems to be a fault with the Wi-Fi. Signal keeps dropping out / all my devices intermittently keep having issues getting Internet access. I've tried rebooting it, different Wi-Fi channel etc. It has not moved and I've not changed anything so I presume there is a fault

At that budget you’ll not get anything worth writing home about so I’d save the money and ask Plusnet for a replacement if it’s starting to fail. Sounds like you had no complaints when it was working so just replace like-for-like for free.

Unless they changed recently the PN routers have been pretty awful units with basic functionality at best. For a basic VDSL/ADSL router then the TP-Link AC1200 (C5) I'm using is fine for an upgrade. Plug in and use the Wizard to setup. It's £69.99 usually but can be found cheaper on occasion.

The TP-Link AC1200 (Archer VR400) is probably the best for your budget, or if you can stretch to £88 there is the Netgear D6400-100UKS.

Both use the Broadcom 63168 chipset which is best one for the majority of FTTC connections.

As suggested above, I’d start by trying to get a new router from Plusnet. If you’re out of contract and willing to re-contract it's almost guaranteed.

There’s also the option of using a BT Hub 6. Cheap to buy new in box, pretty good specs., and should work with a Plusnet connection.

Thanks all for the info. A quick look on the bay suggests I'll be able to pick up a BT Hub 6 cheap so I may do that. As I have some contract left.

I used a HH6 and it was fine. Stable, fast and good wireless range. They're under £30 on eBay.

The router we got from Plusnet was HH5 based and these were super flakey.

OK inspired by the last couple of posts I've ordered one (HH6) off Ebay for £14.99 and will install it on my dad's PN ADSL connection in order to improve his wireless around the house at least. Awful BT connection limited to ~3.3 mbps but can't do much about that as that's it.

If you are in contract then PN should replace the router, if you have issues with wifi then consider either a HH6 (very similar to what you have now, but not as variable) or spend the money on a decent AP.
