Personally, I don't really rate this lens. I just can't seem to get anything out of it above 100mm-ish, which is what you'd really want from a lens with that range.
I've got myself a bit of a shortlist. Note that my shortlist is all for FX lenses, as I plan on future-proofing my purchases and one day (one day, dammit) I'll have the readies for a big-boys camera. The price of the lenses varies wildly quite a lot. I've been matching these to the D5100 and not the D40x but I don't think there's going to be much difference if I were to compare with the D40x.
If money were no object, it'd be the Nikon 70-200mm VRII any day of the week. In fact I've only really added it as some kind of standard to test against, much like I have the 55-200 DX.
But it is, so the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 or Tamron equivalent are looking to be what I'll get. Probably the Sigma, as I think it has a slightly sharper (albeit still quite soft) image.
However you'll notice these are all quite a lot more than the price of the Nikon 55-200mm. The Tamron 70-300mm is probably the next-cheapest, with the Sigma 70-300 close on it's heels, but still just more than twice the price of the Nikon 55-200.
If budget is an issue, try looking for a Nikon 80-200mm AF-S F2.8, It's quite a bit cheaper than the 70-200mm, has all metal construction, used they are usually around £650-£850 depending on condition, but they are very very good lenses.
