Can anyone tell me what this component does on my GPU?

The components in the red circles are the question. One seems to have fell off my card. Its an ati 4870 x2.

Everything seems to be working fine though. Still stable in furmark. Just wondering what fell off and if I could solder it back on?

Might be a capacitor!

Could try if your handy with a soldering Iron, but you would need to be careful :)

It looks like it's a surface mounted resistor. Depends where it's fallen from and what it was doing. They create resistance on the electrical circuit, which lowers the voltage.

So in basic terms, they're used to control voltage. You're best off looking up a diagram for your card to see what area it's used for.

It could be a capacitor though, if you look up the electrial diagrams you'll know exactly what it is.

Chances are it isn't an critical capacitor (possibly used for minor voltage smoothing), so essentially the cards operation will be unaffected by it being missing, and it wouldn't be worth the risk of trying to solder it back on (if you heat up the pcb too much when trying to resolder you could potentially fry another chip/component).

looks like a resistor. Surface mounted, can be tricky for a noob to solder on, but you can do it with a decent iron, some tweezers and a steady hand.

I fixed a hard drive when i scraped a resistor off by mistake.

Could eba acapcitor actuallt looks like it's numbered CXXX and the resistors could be the smaller ones further up the board. Either way you need to put it back on.
