Hi all.
I am looking for a favour.

I have 2 x AMD Athlon 2600+ processors and 1 x AMD Athlon 2400. Recently I bought a new mother board ecs (L7VTA) but I am having trouble getting any output on my monitor.

I know my original 2400 should work as I upgraded to a 2600 and that was ok. Then It all stopped one day and I noticed the cpu fan had fallen off.

I assume it would have an over heat protection??

Anyway I wondered if anyone around Bristol/clevedon/Portishead had an old working AMD system that could test my processors if I sent them to you in the post. I will obviously send a reply paid envelope so you can send them back.

Can anyone test them for me? Just pop them in and see if they power/boot up etc

(don't have to be in Bristol, can send them where ever) !

Dan

what exactly happens when you turn the PC on? do you get an BIOS beeps? do fans connected to the motherboard spin up etc..? If you explain the problem you can probably do some initial testing and maybe solve the issue without having to post the CPU

I don't think these have overheat protection, i remember mine switched off if it was too hot but i think this is more to do with the motherboard

Ok, When I press the power button the heatsink cooler starts fine,as does the fan on the vid card. The hdd starts spinning quietly but not as if its loading windows normally.
I dont get any beeps and i get no output on the screen.
I have tried resetting the cmos jumper as well.

Also I did email a local shop and he said when I power on, if I then hold the power button in for 5 to 10 seconds it should all power off indicating a mother board issue not a cpu issue. I tried that and it did shut off after 5 secs.

Have you set the cpu frequency via jumpers on the motherboard? Try running it @ the lowest setting just to know that the cpu works fine in the board, won't be correct clock speed but at least if all is working it will post.

You can find these jumpers in your manual.

SocketA have no thermal protection, years ago there was a tomshardware video showing what happens when the cooler is removed from these.

I don't have socketA anymore, but not that far away if you need help.

All motherboards shut down when you hold power button for 3seconds..

Phone him up and tell him he's a idiot trying to sell you unnecessary stuff

Well the original xp2400 chip i had is quite old and I replaced it with a 2600+ from ebay and it wouldnt work in my old mother board - So I replaced the motherboard which came bundled with a new 2600+ as well.
Then the new one's fan fell off and it stopped working!! So now I dont know if the chip over heated , also I dont know if the ebay chip works at all and the original 2400 may not work in this board.....................
Confused? I am ...lol

Age aint got much to do with it, there are no moving parts so it either works or don't.

The older2400 should be compatible for sure.

My money is on the motherboard or graphics card taking a dump.

How many ram sticks you got(try with one) then try the other stick, try different ram slots

Disconnect the hard disk and power up.

Reseat the graphics card.

Hi Phunky Phish- I am trying to Pm you. I am not sure if Its because I have just signed up to the forum but I don't appear to be able to pm you. I'll keep trying and perhaps I can send them to you. I would be must gratefull. Failing that I'll try and email you.

Thats easy. The PIV is so old its obviously a williamette and the Athlons are so old school they're still on ceramic packaging. Motherboards had no logic at the time installed for thermal protection, not sure if the Thunderbird had it but i think the Palomino and upwards had some logic but the mainboard had to have it as well. I've yanked a sink off a XP1600+ on a mainboard i've long forgotten the name of, shut off instantly and worked fine for years after. Recently i did it again *well as recent as 2yrs ago, this time with a 2400+ and i think an AN7, same result.

Dont have your email addy at work mate.
Got 3xCPU's this morning.
XP2600 & the Athlon dont work. Have marked them with a red dot on back. The PC boots but does not even make it to the post screen.
The XP2400 does work and booted into windows XP no problem.

By the way, the XP2600 has a chip on the top RH corner. Did you know that?
I have a similar chip to the large die 2600 and it works fine. 1333FSB.
I took the cooler off and started the pc and it cut out in seconds mate, so does have overheat protection, as long as its not turned off in the bios!!

Anyway, will post back today mate.
