Can coldness affect fans?

Hi all

Bit of a silly question here, but can having your PC in a cold area affect the fans? The reason I ask is that since it's started getting colder, my fans seem to be getting louder and louder. I've found out it's definitely 2 of my case fans, as the sound dies down when I lower their speed on the fan controller. I've opened her up and made sure everything's screwed tight enough, but it didn't make a difference.

From what i understand computer fans have a grease in the motor for lubrication. If the temperature drops, i imagine the grease gets thicker and changes viscosity. If the grease is thicker, it would mean more energy to get the blades moving so the starting voltage would have to be slightly higher.

I doubt that coldness would make the fans louder... unless the grease was significantly colder on one side of the hub than the other causing an imbalance and instability in the blades. But it would have to be a massive difference in temperature and i dont think that is plausible in normal domestic situations.

Again, i could be talking rubbish and there is an easy explanation for all this :p
