Can Freesync make up for my aging 2500K?

I have some money to spend on some new computer hardware and was wondering if my plan makes sense. My current system is a 2500K @ 4.2, 8GB DDR3 1600 and a 290X. My monitor is a basic 60hz IPS 23" LG.

I have read that the 2500K is starting to show it's age in games now so I have been considering upgrading the CPU, RAM and motherboard. I would imagine a full upgrade would cost in the region of £400 for a Ryzen system (I am guessing).

That got me thinking though, I could get a decent monitor with Freesync for around the same price and perhaps freesync could smooth away any stutter I was seeing due to the CPU bottlenecking the GPU.

Is this sensible or am would I be better off upgrading the system?
