Can Google Docs be Saved Locally?

I'm thinking of switching some business critical documents to Google docs, but would like to know, can you save a copy of a Google doc to your local computer? Just need to know for back up purposes.

IIRC there's an export/download button you can use which will save it as an MS Office file. I'd recommend signing up and trying it to find out if it's going to work for you or not, especially as it's free.
