Can Hyper-V do this?

I'm looking to modify my headless home-server and I'm hoping Hyper-V can do what I'd like.

I'd like to have Hyper-V booted from startup with 1 virtual machine (at the moment) which is my file and plex server.

This will be headless so I need to remote (RDP) into both Hyper-V and the server o/s from my laptop.

I'll be looking to upgrade the machine in the future and install a couple more virtual machines for messing around etc, so I'd be looking at removing the drive and plonking it in another machine.

Is hyper-v the best option for this?

That's my plan really.

I'll install Hyper-V Server Core on the server and administer it using Hyper-V manager from my laptop.

My comment about the command line stuff is just that Core has no GUI as such, so will probably have to use some command line functions along the way.

corefig looks interesting, thanks!

Not sure how useful it will be to me since the only VM experience I have is through courses I have done rather than real-world usage.

I'm sure it will help though. Just need a new machine to run them on!

Installed Server 2008 last night, spent a couple of hours playing with o/s's and images and that seemed the best option.

Just before bed found out that Windows 8 Hyper-V manager cannot connect to Server 2008 VM's!

Planning an install of Server 2012 tonight!

Will be doing a build-log at some point as there's lots of things I've found out that took a lot of digging and will probably be useful to others.

Would like to do a Server Core install, but there's a couple of stumbling blocks.

My install of Server Core kept failing at 31% with an 0x0...9 failure. This I believe is due to an issue relating to the install program not liking a hard drive.

Secondly, I only have the standard 2GB of ram and running Core would effectively be a 3rd operating system with the other 2 as VM's. I'm going to run Server 2012 for now with 1 VM which should run better until I get more ram installed.
