Hi.

Iv got a thread up in general hardware about the problems iv been having with my new threadripper setup. Because I don't have an spare parts I www s forces to go to a local repair hop so they could take a look at it. They said the rx480 I had was broken and I needed a new one so I went and bought a 1070. Got the pc home and its still the same so I took it back. Now they tell me its the motherboard.

I looked at the receipt for the card and it said no refunds are given unless for faulty hardware. Of course I only bought this card based on the information that my old one was a problem but its not. I think I should be allowed to ask to return this card because I wouldn't have got it otherwise and It was £500 that I didnt have to spend.
What should I do?

But should I be firm and demand that or are they within their rights to deny me? The didnt diagnose the pc properly after all.

Assuming you bought it from them just ask them. Don't go in demanding stuff or making yourself a pain in the ass from the off. Speak with them calmly and state the facts, I'm sure they'd rather refund you for the card than lose face over the whole thing.

How did they diagnose the problem? Did you take the machine to them? Did they install the card? Do you still have the old card? Prices are high, I'm sure someone would buy it off you for what you paid for it.

Did you buy the replacement card from them or elsewhere?
Yea I bought it from them.

They basically started by taking out the old card and replacing it with the Nvidia 1080ti and said the pc was brand new, that if I put that card in then it would be fine. So I bought a 1070 as it was the least pricey of the decent cards in stock.

I dont want to seem like a jerk but I think it's not unreasonable to ask for a return. I guess my concern is I buy a new motherboard from them and it doesn't work, to then be told I need a new psu.

In fact I just got a call saying it's the memory now, that the new board didn't work but this memory in he pc has it working perfectly. Surely the RAM would be one of the first things you test before taking the motherboard out.

I would not trust them with it. Get the machine back, ask for a refund on the card as that wasn't what the problem was and let us help you diagnose the issue.
I would do that but if the problem is indeed hardware related I don't have any spare parts to test the system with.

The shop is totally clueless.

Get a refund for the 1070, you are entitled to one.

If you think it is your RAM, try each of the sticks one at a time to see if the PC starts.

Yep. Turned out my memory just wouldn't work on the system so swapped it for 16gb of other memory and it's now working at last.
Decided I'm going to compromise and sell one of my 480s to a friend and keep the 1070 because its faster but not much more expensive.

Glad you sorted said problem!! And yes, if keeping the 1070 is an option then do it - A gooooooood chunk more powerful than a 480 (which are still fetching great prices!) :)
