Can I bend ethernet cable like this?

If its T&G which it most likely will be then he will have to cut off the tongue with a circular saw which is just not worth it in a high traffic area next to a door. Best thing is to take advice about powerline adapters for something like a tv but doesn't look like op is interested in that approach. I agree it is indeed a trip hazzard not to mention ugly looking.

I'm still considering powerline, but I'm going to upgrade to a Virgin v6 in the near future and don't know how well that works with powerline.

edit: Is there much difference between Cat5e and powerline ethernet?

Powerline on a really good day, with top end adapters, is going to give you 300Mbps-ish. Cat5e will give 1000Mbps (and will be full duplex, not half).

If you can find a way to neatly route a network cable then do it.

White Cat5e stapled to the skirting board and around the door frame will look absolutely fine. Don’t use cable clips because they look terrible.

It depends what you want to use it for just for simple tv such as IPTV etc 300mb throughput is more than enough. I used one with a 5 port hub for ages running my tv and console and never ran into any issues with lag etc. I mean sure they may add jitter and won't be much good in terms of online shooters etc but again it depends on the end user. Have you thought about using outdoor rated cat5/6 and running around the house? At the end of the day its up to you what you are comfortable looking at and if a wire doesn't do your head in like it would mine then it makes sense to do it how you intend to

My TP-Link AV600 powerline adaptors would drop the download speed to around 3Mbps when other things like the TV, Sky box etc where turned on :(
